If you’re dreaming of the ultimate American holiday filled with iconic cities, bucket-list experiences, and unforgettable moments with your family, let me share my recent adventure that ticked all the boxes! Over three incredible weeks, we explored San Francisco, Las Vegas, Disneyland, and Santa Monica Beach—each destination offering something unique, magical, and truly memorable.
San Francisco: Seafood, Sourdough & Scenic Views
We kicked off our adventure in San Francisco, spending 5 nights at the stylish Hotel Zoe Fisherman’s Wharf—a perfect base for exploring this charming, hilly city.
Highlights:
- A fascinating tour of Alcatraz Island (highly recommended, definitely a family favourite —book early!)
- Wandering the iconic Fisherman’s Wharf
- A day trip across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito—quaint, colourful and full of personality
- Sampling clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl—a local classic and an absolute must!
San Francisco surprised me with how friendly and welcoming the locals were. It was a great reminder of the warmth and generosity you often find while travelling.
Las Vegas: Glitz, Gondolas & the Grand Canyon
Next, we flew to Las Vegas for 6 nights of dazzling lights and desert adventures. We stayed at Caesar’s Palace, where we had the most incredible view overlooking the luxurious pool area—what a way to wake up each day!
Highlights:
- A breathtaking day trip to the Grand Canyon by helicopter—words truly don’t do it justice
- Shopping up a storm at the Las Vegas Premium Outlets
- Soaring down the Flying Fox zipline on Fremont Street
- A magical gondola ride through The Venetian
- Dinner at a French restaurant at the Paris Hotel, complete with front-row views of the Bellagio fountains
Las Vegas was a family favourite. It’s not just for adults—there’s so much to do for all ages, and the entertainment options are endless. My kids both picked Las Vegas as their favourite location of the trip!
Disneyland: Childhood Dreams Come True
We then spent 5 nights in Anaheim at the Courtyard by Marriott Theme Park Entrance—an absolute gem in terms of location and comfort. Disneyland was just a short stroll away.
Highlights:
- The joy of being completely immersed in the magic of Disney and watching the magical parades and fireworks
- Experiencing rides like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Indiana Jones Adventure
- Making lifelong memories with my kids—it was honestly more emotional than I expected!
Disneyland was every bit as magical as you’d imagine. If you’re considering a Disney family holiday, I can’t recommend it enough—especially with the right hotel just steps away.
Santa Monica: Beach Bliss & Bike Rides
To wind down, we finished our trip with 5 nights in Santa Monica at the luxurious Fairmont Miramar Hotel. The location was unbeatable—steps from the beach and a short stroll to the famous Santa Monica Pier and bike ride to Venice Beach.
Highlights:
- Riding bikes along the beach boulevard between Santa Monica and Venice Beach
- Exploring the iconic Santa Monica Pier
- A Hollywood and Stars’ Homes tour—fun for the whole family!
- Visiting the Petersen Automotive Museum in LA (a hit with both big and little kids – especially having car enthusiast boys!)
- Dining at a fantastic Mexican restaurant (we loved it so much we went back three times!)
Santa Monica gave us time to relax, soak in the sun, and enjoy the classic California beach lifestyle.
My Travel Tips for Exploring the USA
- Location matters: Choose centrally located hotels—you’ll save time and steps!
- Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tours are a fantastic way to get your bearings in each city and to get a good overview or where things are
- Don’t underestimate how walkable and family-friendly American cities can be
- Always leave a bit of space in your suitcase—you’ll definitely shop!
Final Thoughts: A Journey We'll Never Forget
This was my children’s first trip to the USA, and it was everything I had hoped for and more. Seeing the wonder in their eyes—from the magic of Disneyland to the awe of the Grand Canyon—made every moment special.
