Hi, my name is Lisa 👋
I’m a travel advisor with a passion for exploring the world and sharing destinations that truly move the soul. There are trips that surprise you — the ones that remind you why you fell in love with travel in the first place — and my journey through Kyushu, Japan was exactly that.
From steaming hot springs and sushi feasts to ancient castles and the warmth of the locals, every moment felt like stepping into another story.
✈️ Trip Overview
Over four unforgettable days, I explored the captivating island of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. Known for its volcanic landscapes, hot springs (onsen), and deep cultural heritage, Kyushu offers travellers a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and authentic Japanese hospitality.
This journey was part of an incredible “famil experience” (educational travel trip for travel advisors), hosted by Oita, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto Tourism in partnership with ANA (All Nippon Airways). I was expertly guided by the wonderful Akio and Lily from Glide Japan, alongside my fellow Australian mobile travel advisors, Emma and Justine.
🗺️ Itinerary Highlights
Day 1 — Kitakyushu: Retro Charm & Culinary Surprises
We began our journey in Kitakyushu, starting with a quirky and surprisingly fascinating visit to the TOTO Museum, dedicated to Japan’s famous bathroom innovations! Next stop: the Mojiko Retro District, a beautifully preserved port area featuring early 20th-century Western-style architecture. Lunch was a highlight — yaki curry, a comforting baked curry topped with cheese and egg, and an absolute must-try local dish.
From there, a short ferry ride took us to Karato Fish Market, where I experienced pure sushi heaven! The fugu sashimi (puffer fish) lunch was an adventure in itself, followed by breathtaking panoramic views from the Mount Sarakura cable car.
Day 2 — Beppu: Healing Waters & Volcanic Wonders
We journeyed south to Beppu, one of Japan’s most famous onsen towns. Our stay at the brand-new Fujiya Hotel was nothing short of exquisite — complete with a rooftop onsen and private hot spring baths. The afternoon brought a walking tour and local cooking class, where we met the friendliest locals.
No visit to Beppu is complete without exploring the legendary “Hells of Beppu”, a collection of dramatic, steaming geothermal pools that showcase the region’s volcanic power.
Day 3 — Mount Aso & Kumamoto: Nature & Tradition Collide
Next, we ventured inland to Mount Aso, one of the world’s largest active volcanoes. Standing at the crater rim was both humbling and exhilarating — a moment I’ll never forget.
That evening, we travelled to Kumamoto, where ancient traditions came alive through an immersive Samurai experience. Dinner was a lively Japanese BBQ shared with locals at Kumamoto’s buzzing street food village — a night of laughter, warmth, and new friendships.
Day 4 — Kumamoto Castle: A Symbol of Strength
Our final day was spent exploring the majestic Kumamoto Castle, a masterpiece of resilience beautifully restored after the 2016 earthquake. Its imposing walls and serene gardens perfectly encapsulate Kyushu’s spirit — enduring, proud, and full of grace.
🍱 Local Cuisine
Kyushu is a paradise for food lovers! From fresh sushi at Karato Fish Market to hearty yaki curry in Mojiko, every meal was a sensory delight. The fugu sashimi was daring yet divine, and our Japanese BBQ dinner in Kumamotobrought together flavour, fun, and friendship in the most memorable way.
🎎 Cultural Insights
What makes Kyushu so special is the way its people preserve their traditions and hospitality while embracing modernity. Whether it was a friendly wave from a Beppu shopkeeper or the reverent quiet around Kumamoto Castle, there’s an unspoken warmth here — a deep connection to both land and community.
💡 Travel Tips

- Don’t rush! Kyushu deserves at least five to seven days to fully experience its diverse landscapes and culture.
- Bring a small towel — you’ll need it for the many onsen baths scattered across the island!
- If travelling in winter, pack layers — mountain areas like Aso can be quite cool.
💭 Personal Impressions
Kyushu surprised and delighted me at every turn. It’s authentic Japan — untouched, welcoming, and rich in stories. From volcanic peaks to warm-hearted locals, this island feels like a world within itself. I leave with a full heart, a grateful spirit, and a camera roll bursting with memories.
Forever thankful for the opportunity to explore this extraordinary region — and to do what I love most: help others discover the beauty of the world.
