This UNESCO World Heritage site is not just a marvel of architecture but a symbol of Cambodia’s spiritual heritage. I woke up before dawn to catch the temple’s silhouette against the rising sun, the beauty of this moment is hard to put into words. The temple’s towering spires gradually emerged from the darkness, casting a golden glow over the intricate stone carvings and reflecting in the water of the surrounding moat.
For anyone visiting, make sure to arrive early, before the crowds start pouring in, this is to fully appreciate the serenity and magnificence of this ancient site. It’s a perfect moment to snap that iconic photograph and reflect on the rich history that surrounds you.
The Enigmatic Faces of Bayon Temple
After my sunrise visit to Angkor Wat, I made my way to Angkor Thom, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire. One of the highlights of Angkor Thom is the Bayon Temple, known for its stunning and mysterious stone faces. This temple, built in the late 12th century, is one of the most visually striking in the Angkor complex.
Walking through Bayon’s corridors, I was surrounded by more than 200 giant faces carved into the stone, all seemingly staring down with a serene and enigmatic expression. The faces are believed to represent Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, though some say they resemble the face of King Jayavarman VII, who commissioned the temple’s construction.

It’s a mesmerising experience, and the perfect place for both photography and contemplation.
The “Tomb Raider” Magic of Ta Prohm Temple
For fans of the 2001 Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movie, a visit to Ta Prohm is an absolute must. This temple has become famous worldwide for its unique and atmospheric appearance, with massive tree roots sprawling over and through the ancient stone structures. The sight of ancient trees intertwining with crumbling ruins creates a scene straight out of an adventure film, and it’s no surprise that Ta Prohm served as a key location for the “Tomb Raider” movie.
Walking through Ta Prohm, I marvelled at how nature had gradually overtaken the ruins. Giant banyan and silk-cotton trees had grown their roots through the walls, creating a surreal juxtaposition of human engineering and natural force. The temple’s atmospheric beauty, combined with its history of being “lost” to nature for centuries, made it one of the highlights of my trip.
Like Bayon, Ta Prohm’s corridors and doorways were a photographer’s dream. There’s an incredible sense of history here—especially when you consider how the temple was rediscovered and partially restored in the late 19th century.
Savouring Cheap Eats at Pub Street
Siem Reap offers much more than just temples and ruins. The town’s vibrant Pub Street is a hub of activity in the evenings, filled with a wide range of restaurants, street food stalls, and lively bars. After a full day of temple-hopping, I headed to Pub Street for a well-deserved break and to sample some local Cambodian delicacies.
The food scene here is diverse and affordable. I devoured traditional dishes like amok, a creamy fish curry steamed in a banana leaf; bai sach chrouk, which consists of marinated pork served with rice and pickled vegetables; and lok lak, stir-fried beef served with a delicious pepper sauce. For a refreshing dessert, try sangkhya lapov, a coconut custard dessert that was both sweet and satisfying.
Pub Street’s atmosphere is lively and casual, and it’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. Whether you’re looking to grab a quick snack or sit down for a hearty meal, the choices are endless and budget-friendly.
Quad Biking Through Villages for a Sunset Adventure
For those who want to venture beyond the temples, quad biking through the rural villages surrounding Siem Reap is an unforgettable experience. I embarked on a guided tour that took me through lush rice fields, small villages, and remote Cambodian landscapes. The ride was exhilarating and offered a refreshing break from the crowded temple sites.
The highlight of the tour was catching the sunset over the serene countryside. As the sky transitioned into hues of pink and orange, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to this peaceful and authentic side of Cambodia. Located just a short distance from both Pub Street and the Angkor temples, the hotel provided great value for money.
